A pool deck has to do three things at once: stay cool enough to walk on barefoot in August, stay grippy when it is wet, and hold its color under direct sun and salt air. We resurface over sound existing decks — including decks with a failed textured or cool-deck coating — with anti-slip finishes and UV-stable pigments, rather than tearing out a slab that is still perfectly good.

In most cases, yes — including decks with a failed textured or cool-deck coating that is cracking, flaking, or peeling. The existing coating is ground off during prep rather than coated over, and the new finish bonds to the deck itself. Full removal and tear-out is only on the table when the deck underneath has failed structurally, not just the finish on top.
Not if it is specified correctly. Anti-slip additives and textured finishes are chosen for the deck at the time of the assessment — a surface around a pool is a different specification from a driveway, and it should be treated that way. Tell us how the space actually gets used, including whether kids run on it, and the texture gets specified accordingly.
Cool-deck style finishes and lighter pigments reduce how much heat the surface holds compared with bare or dark concrete, which is the whole point of the category in a climate like ours. No exterior surface in full August sun is genuinely cool, but the difference between a specified cool-touch finish and plain dark concrete is large and immediately noticeable underfoot.
Salt exposure and constant UV are the two things that age a pool deck finish fastest, and both are standard conditions here. The finishes we specify for pool decks use UV-stable pigments for exactly that reason. What matters at least as much is the sealing and maintenance schedule, which we will walk you through.
